Narcissism

Narcissism, seen through the lens of metaphysical is not a root but a bloom, the visible flare of a knot of older wounds that cannot stand apart from one another.

Self-praise is only the reverse face of a single conglomerate: fear of other people, a long hunger for love that was never reliably given, and the conviction that one occupies the center of the world. These strands catch one another like hooks in wet wool. Pull one and the rest tighten. Narcissism itself is merely the effect that spills outward and becomes visible to the room. It is the smoke, not the fire.

The work, if it is to be real, is to unbraid the causes into separate threads and take them down one by one. The moment a single strand is loosened, the whole display begins to dim, because the effect exists only while the strands remain woven together. What looks like character is in fact a program: a compensatory spell cast so that inner trouble need not be met bare. The complexes, the grievances, the sense of inner disorder, the inability to live without feeding on others - these occupy so much of the inner chamber that they can announce themselves only through this particular mask. Without the mask they would turn inward and begin to eat the host with their true meaning.

The narcissist lives inside a private cosmology in which others have no equal right to exist beside him. Since he cannot rewrite the world by decree, he reaches for the only lever left: he forces admiration. The methods are, as a rule, psychopathic in texture, not because of some theatrical cruelty, but because they are a quiet violence against the personhood of others. He does not see personalities there. For him the only self with a rightful claim to existence is his own. Were the restraining thread in that same knot not so colossal, the impulse would not stop at domination of attention; it would move, if it could, toward erasure. He cannot. That inability is itself one of the stones in the pile.

If the narcissist himself wishes to lay the pattern down, he can do so only gradually, thread by thread. If those close to him hope to do the unweaving for him, they should expect a long disappointment. The knot does not yield to outside fingers.

From the magical side the answer is colder and simpler. If such minds continue to appear, they are still required by the larger pattern. For many people they function as an unwitting trial, teachers who never applied for the post and would refuse it if offered. On that trial a person either falls, or begins at last to read other human beings without the old illusions. So long as the system and its magical ground permit them, their mission toward others is not yet finished.

Toward himself he is walking marble sculpture. He learns nothing, weighs nothing, misreads both his own measure and everyone else’s. Useless as a pupil of his own life, he is, for those around him, a kind of virus-provocateur. That virus either inoculates, curing an excess of illusion about people and the world, or it dissolves a weaker consciousness entirely, folding it into the same illusion and placing it under his spell.

The effect fades only when the inner congregation that sustains it is taken apart. Until then the mask holds, and the trial continues.
